MechWarrior II's Soundtrack Composer (A Little Hero Worship)
After a little curiosity lead me to searching the internet for information on the track names (see thread here), I came across a few sites of interest. The first two were GameSpy and GameSpot articles praising the game's soundtrack. Nothing new there; people have been lauding it as a prime early example of quality game music for years. However, upon a bit more prying, I found this:
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/nov9...les/jeehun.htm
This article on Jeehun Hwang, the composer of all the tracks from MechWarrior II, was truly impressive. It explains his background, how he got in bed with Activision, even how little he knew about digital music producing while accepting the job. Be sure to read at least to "The Sequel" for a nice expose on his history. On a whim, I decided to IMDB him:
http://imdb.com/name/nm0404854/
It seems that James Cameron has taken a shine to his work, judging by his most recent two gigs. Very nice to see that someone who started way back when game soundtracks were almost optional is doing so well today. Almost a Cinderella story of sorts.
For those of you not familiar with the soundtrack in question, all 26 tracks can be found here. The reason there's no "Track 01" is due to the way the original MechWarrior II CD was burnt - the first track was empty. Also, Track 27 is a latin/samba remix of Track 09 that never appears during gameplay (to the best of my knowledge).
Anyway, here's to you, Jeehun. The MechWarrior II OST will forever have an exalted place on my playlist. Now if I could only find a small scale model or figure of a Nova for my desk...
